CPPP Weekly Wrap-Up

Advocating for an Equitable and Just Texas

During COVID-19 and for the future, government and fact-based public policy are critical for our survival. Here are some highlights of our most recent work to address the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for Texans:

HIGHLIGHTS

Advocating for Essential Workers

The essential workers protecting our health and keeping our state running through the pandemic deserve praise for their sacrifice, but these workers need more than our thanks in order to support their families and keep their families healthy and safe. The COVID-19 outbreak has directed a spotlight on the often-overlooked contributions of essential workers in Texas. CPPP Deputy Legislative & Policy Director Mia Ibarra discusses why we need policy changes to ensure the health and financial security of these hard-working Texans. Read more here.

More Changes to Medicaid and CHIP Policies are Needed

We are grateful for the progress made so far to improve access to health care and testing, especially accessing federal funding for COVID-19 testing for the uninsured. But there are still essential steps that Texas leaders must take to remove barriers to coverage, testing, and treatment. In this latest blog, our Health & Wellness experts Melissa McChesney, Stacey Pogue and Anne Dunkelberg highlight the key state responses to the pandemic and discuss the critical steps still needed.

What to Do If You Lose Your Job-Based Health Insurance

In the last five weeks, more than 1.3 million Texans filed for unemployment, and job losses are expected to grow. Our Senior Policy Analysts Stacey Pogue and Melissa McChesney offer a new guide to help Texans understand their health insurance coverage options during the Coronavirus crisis. Thinking of the Bigger Picture

We appreciate the extremely difficult choices federal, state, and local officials are making to address the immediate crisis as best as possible. Leaders have taken steps to slow down this deadly virus and to “flatten the curve” on new cases, but the COVID-19 pandemic will have long-lasting ramifications that require us to look at the bigger picture. In Looking Beyond the Crisis, Legislative and Policy Director Luis Figueroa discusses the long-standing policy failures that COVID-19 has exposed and presents policy solutions for lawmakers to address these shortcomings.

Elevating Student Voices

For many Texas college students, the COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated personal and familial housing and financial insecurity while presenting the additional challenges of adapting to digital classrooms. The higher education institutional response must ensure that these students receive the support they need to meet their immediate needs and to continue making academic progress in the aftermath. CPPP signed on to a joint letter detailing necessary steps Texas higher education leaders and lawmakers can take now and in the coming legislative session to assist Texas college students. Read a summary of our recommendations from CPPP's Ashley Williams here.
